Gary Wilson
Gary Wilson is a 20-year Australian Army veteran who served as an Infantry Paratrooper with the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment (Parachute) before moving into Electronic Warfare and later attaching to the 2nd Commando Regiment.
In 2010, while deployed to Afghanistan, he survived a Black Hawk helicopter crash that left him with severe traumatic brain injuries and multiple complex fractures.
His part of Fallen Angel is written from the inside of that experience — the deployment, the crash, the long and uneven recovery, and the slow work of rebuilding identity after everything changed. Gary later competed as an Invictus athlete and continues to advocate for better support for veterans living with brain injury.
Renee Wilson
Renee Wilson is a lawyer with specialist experience in the not-for-profit sector.
She met Gary in a Canberra pub in 2007 and later became his primary advocate after the Black Hawk crash, fighting for his care when he could not speak for himself.
Her chapters in Fallen Angel tell the other side of the story — the phone call that changed everything, the years of advocacy, the strain on family life, and the steady work of holding a relationship and a household together while everything shifted around them.
